How to Make Tonneau Cover Snaps Easier to Unsnap

Vinyl tonneau covers protect the contents of your truck's bed without adding a lot of weight to the vehicle. The metal female snaps attached to the tonneau cover connect to metal male snaps fixed to the sides of your truck bed. Friction builds between metal components. This increases the difficulty of snapping and unsnapping the tonneau cover when you need to access the contents of your truck bed. Reducing the friction between the male and female snaps eases the task of snapping and unsnapping your tonneau cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Cotton swabs
  • Petroleum-based lubricant
  • Grasp the tonneau cover on either side of a metal snap. Pull the cover away from the truck bed to disconnect the metal snap. Disconnect all snaps on one side of the truck bed.

  • Dip the end of a cotton swab in a petroleum-based lubricant.

  • Wipe the end of the cotton swab on the inside of a female snap attached to the tonneau cover. Rub the cotton swab around the outside of a male snap. Dip the cotton swab in the lubricant before moving on to the next set of snaps.

  • Pull the tonneau cover tight. Push the lubricated female snap on the lubricated male snap. Reconnect all undone snaps.

  • Disconnect, lubricate and reconnect all female and male snaps of the cover and truck bed. Ensure you undo one side of your truck bed at a time.
