What Is a Leveling Kit?

A leveling kit is an aftermarket option for trucks and SUVs that is used to customize a vehicle's appearance. The kits can be installed by a vehicle owner, but are often installed in a shop.

Background

  • Trucks and SUVs with no load in the back often ride higher in the back than in the front of the truck. This way, when the back of the truck is fully loaded, it is level with the front of the truck rather than riding low.

Function

  • Since many people drive their trucks and SUVs empty most of the time, it can be perceived as an aesthetics problem to have the back of the truck a little higher than the front. Some owners do not like the look, although it usually causes no damage. Leveling kits lift the front end slightly to even out the look.

Types

  • There are four different types of leveling kits. Strut extensions are for later models with coil-over struts. Torsion keys are aftermarket tools that alter the torsion bar. Coil spacers are placed on top of factory spring buckets. Block kits are used to alter the height of the rear of the truck.
