How to Install Spindle Lift Kits

If you want to lift your truck or SUV, one way to do it is to get a lifted spindle. The spindle is the connection between the front control arms on your suspension, and it holds the rotor. A lifted spindle moves down the position of the rotor, which moves the wheels lower to the ground and lifts the vehicle higher in the air. This process can be done in a few hours with some basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tire iron
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Hammer
  • 1/2-inch ratchet and socket set
  • 3/8-inch ratchet and socket set
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Bungee cord
  • Replacement cotter pins
  • Open-end wrench set
  • Lift spindle
  • Lift up the front of the truck using the jack and put the jack stands underneath the frame. Lower the truck onto the stands, then take off the wheels using a tire iron. Unbolt the brake caliper from the rotor using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and suspend it from the frame using a bungee cord.

  • Take off the dust cap on the center of the rotor using the flathead screwdriver and a hammer. Remove the cotter pin on the center of the spindle using the needle-nose pliers. Unbolt the center nut on the rotor using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Slide the rotor off of the spindle, making sure not to drop the bearings out of the rotor. If you do, you should replace them with new models and re-grease them as well.

  • Remove the cotter pins in the upper and lower ball joints, plus the tie rod end, using the needle-nose pliers. Unbolt the tie rod nut from the spindle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and lift the tie rod end out of the spindle. Set the jack underneath the lower control arm and lift it up until it just contacts the lower control arm. Unbolt the upper control arm from the spindle using an open-end wrench, then unbolt the lower control arm ball joint from the spindle and lift the spindle off of the ball joints.

  • Set the lift spindle onto the lower ball joint on the lower control arm and secure it in place using the stock nut and an open-end wrench. Install a replacement cotter pin into the ball joint using the needle-nose pliers. Install the upper control arm ball joint into the spindle and tighten it in place using an open-end wrench, and install a new cotter pin using the needle-nose pliers. Install the tie rod end into the spindle using the stock nut and an open-end wrench, and then install a new cotter pin using the needle-nose pliers.

  • Slide the rotor onto the spindle and tighten the center nut until it won't turn anymore, then back off the nut for one-quarter rotation. Install a cotter pin into the spindle using the needle-nose pliers, then tap the dust cap onto the rotor using the hammer. Reinstall the caliper onto the rotor with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Reinstall the wheels using the tire iron and take the truck off of the jack stands using the jack.
