How to Install Motorcycle Exhaust Tape

In addition to being great looking, exhaust tape can help reduce the amount of heat you feel coming from the exhaust pipes of your motorcycle. It's also useful for hiding the unsightly bluing of your exhaust headers, especially if you're running some sort of exhaust upgrade that causes it to run a bit hot. Installation is easy, but get out your tools and your patience.

Things You'll Need

  • Hose clamps--2 for each section of pipe you want to wrap
  • Bucket of water
  • Set of wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Soak your wrap first in water for about 1/2 hour.

  • Remove your exhaust. Most people only wrap the exhaust header, leaving the muffler part of the system alone. If you want to do this, make sure you properly disconnect every part of the exhaust system. Leave the exhaust flanges on the engine side of the header pipes.

  • Start wrapping the pipes from the engine side first, adding one of the hose clamps to keep that end of the wrap stuck fairly still.

  • Work slowly to wrap the rest of the pipe, making sure not to leave any wrinkles or creases in the tape. Overlap the tape 1/4 inch or more to ensure proper coverage.

  • Finish wrapping the pipe all the way to the end and give the end a a good tightening twist, then add the other end clamp. Let them dry thoroughly and check for tightness.

  • Reinstall the motorcycle's exhaust pipes, making sure that the hose clamps are as tight as you can get them.
