How to Install Billet Grilles

What makes a car special are the things it does and the way it looks. Such individuality is lacking when the Big Three automakers produce cars and trucks that are owned by millions of people. However, the addition of body kits and customized styling can separate one vehicle from another. Installing billet grilles is one such way to accomplish this.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle Billet grille Cutting grinder Adjustable wrench Allen wrench Screwdriver Socket Ratchet Pliers
  • Remove existing grille parts to insert the new billet grille assemblies. Truck owners may have to remove the entire front grille from the body clips and threaded bolts that secure the front grille in place. Begin by disconnecting the battery from the electrical system. Some grilles will have to be installed after the removal of protective covers and body parts around the headlamps and turn signals. Protect against short circuits by removing the battery cable from its power source.

  • Cut out the old grille parts that need to be cut using a hand-held cutting grinder with an abrasive wheel. Truck grilles are more commonly cut out in this way and car grilles are removed separately. Use the hand-held grinder to smooth out the rough edges that may be left after removing a grille by cutting through plastic or metal parts. A proper cut and grind allows for the new billet grille to fit into place easily and secured tightly.

  • Attach the billet grille into the cut opening using the attachment brackets or fasteners that were included with the billet grille package. The clips are tightened to the grille frame using self-tapping screws or rivets that hold the two parts together. Car applications may involve taking out screws with a screwdriver or Allen wrench to get the old grille parts out of their supports. A billet grille may come ready to "bolt on" or an extra bracket may need to be installed for the new billet grille will be secured to for fit. Inserting and securing the grilles in place is as important as picking out the right billet grille to customize your ride.

  • Finish the installation of a new custom billet grille by replacing the front clip and protective coverings around the radiator and headlamps of the vehicle. Using the same body fasteners, tighten and secure each piece. Since the front of any vehicle is susceptible to tire shake and jostling from rough roads, billet grilles can be loosened from their position, making the security of the grille depend on the tightness of all the securing anchors.
