How to Hook Up the Switch for Police Strobe Head Lights in P71

Ford's Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, sometimes called the P71, is a commonly used police vehicle. The P71 can often be acquired used from auctions and other sources, and makes an adequate private security patrol vehicle because it is often sold with existing after-market options, such as spot lights. Some recent P71's have multi-fuel capability and the vehicle has a standard high-power engine. If parts have been removed prior to auction, such as a headlight strobe light switch, you can replace them.

Things You'll Need

  • +12VDC SP/ST 200 mA switch
  • Verify that the headlight flasher controller is hooked up to the vehicle headlight interface connector. It will be near the horns. Three-wire connections should exist. They are yellow, blue and green on Whelan's SSFOSC6 flasher. The black wire must be connected to the "Ground" and the brown connector is disabled. The white/violet wire is related to the hard-coding of the flash pattern selection and should be taped, so that it is insulated.

  • Check that the red wire from the controller is connected to a fuse and then on to the positive side of the battery. The Whelan product uses a 15-amp fuse, but yours may be different. Check the specifications with the manufacturer. The manufacture and model number will be notes on a plate on the flasher control.

  • Connect the new switch by connecting the orange wire that runs from the flasher controller to one side of the switch. Then connect the other side of the switch to a 1-amp fuse. Connect the other side of the fuse to the positive side of the battery.
