How do I Get More Horsepower From an Old 360 Motor?

Chrysler produced the 360 engine between 1971 and 2002. In the 1980s you would usually find it powering a truck or an SUV, but it was also found under the hoods of some police patrol vehicles. While early versions of the 360 engine achieved around 175 horsepower, design improvements during its 31-year production life saw improvements in the engine's output. With the addition of a few after sales modifications, you can have even greater increases in power.

Things You'll Need

  • Cold air intake air filter
  • Performance header system
  • Performance exhaust system
  • Automotive tools
  • Install a cold intake air filter to replace the standard air filter that comes with the 360 engine. A cold air intake filter allows more cool air to be pulled through the engine. This in turn allows the engine to remain cooler and perform more efficiently. A cooler more efficient engine will give you a moderate but noticeable increase in horsepower.

  • Replace the header system with a high performance version that is bigger than the standard product. A larger header system will result in the hot air produced by the engine being expelled much quicker. As in the case with the cold intake air filter, a cooler engine means better performance and an increase in horse power.

  • Replace the standard exhaust system with a performance version that uses a pipe with an increased diameter. While the increased size of the exhaust pipe, used in conjunction with the performance header system, will give you a more significant increase in horsepower, either option installed independently will show some improvements in performance.
