How to Install a Flip Down Screen on a Ford Expedition

Technology has brought us smaller TVs that are much easier to install in our vehicles than the older, larger models. A flip-down screen can be neatly tucked away by flipping the screen up to the ceiling when not in use. Plus the LCD display does not take up much room when it is in use. The process for installing a flip-down screen in a Ford Expedition requires the use of common household tools and takes less than an hour to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Carpenters knife
  • Drill with machine tap drill bit
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Remove the dome light. Place the head of the flathead screwdriver under the dome light fixture and turn the screwdriver a quarter of a turn to loosen the dome light from the ceiling. When the dome light is loose, remove it from the ceiling with your hands. Unplug the wire harness from the dome light and tuck the wire harness up into the ceiling.

  • Place the TV bracket up to the ceiling over the hole. Use a carpenter's knife to trace around the bracket cutting the surrounding headliner. Remove the bracket from the ceiling and discard the cut piece of headliner. Removing the headliner reduces vibration in the TV screen.

  • Remove the wire harness from the ceiling hole and insert the wire harness through the wire slot in the bracket. Hold the bracket up to the ceiling where the headliner has been removed. Use a drill with a machine tap drill bit to make four holes---one in each corner of the bracket---through the bracket into the ceiling. Do not drill through the ceiling. A machine tap drill bit drills threaded holes that work well with screws.

  • Insert the mounting screws into the drill holes of the bracket and tighten them into the ceiling using a Phillips screwdriver. Plug the wire harness into the back of the TV screen. The wire harness is a cluster of wires that connect to a rectangular plug. Slide the screen onto the bracket until in locks in place.
