How to Program a Transmitter for Keyless Entry on a Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer is a mid-sized sports utility vehicle that was introduced for the 1990 model year. Ford has been offering keyless entry systems as an optional feature for the Explorer since 1993. These remote systems allow you to lock or unlock the doors of your Ford Explorer by pushing a button on a small electronic transmitter, usually attached to a key chain. Programming your Explorer to recognize commands from the transmitter takes only minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Key
  • Ford keyless entry transmitter
  • Close the doors of your Explorer and then quickly open the driver's side door.

  • Leave the driver's side door open and press the "Unlock" button on the door's power locks control panel.

  • Insert the key into the Explorer's ignition cylinder and turn it back and forth between the "Off" and "Run" positions eight times. The power locks will automatically cycle.

  • Press any button on the Ford keyless entry transmitter to program it to your Explorer.

  • Turn the Explorer's ignition to the "Off" position. Remove the key from the ignition cylinder to exit the vehicle's programming mode.
