My 2006 Dodge Charger Won't Shift Out of Park

The Dodge Charger has a documented issue that can cause the vehicle to become stuck in park. Luckily, you can fix the problem with a few quick steps and get your car back on the road. In some cases, the car will require service at an auto shop but you can disengage the transmission from park so you don't have to have the car towed. While you are unlocking the shifter, you can also check for common problems you may be able to fix without having to take your Charger to a mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Dodge keys
  • Screwdriver
  • Solvent cleaner
  • Remove the rubber tray underneath the ashtray. It should lift right out.

  • Remove the rubber liner from the carrying tray to the right of the shifter. You should be able to pull the liner upwards and lift it out.

  • Remove the shift knob by unscrewing it. Rotate the knob counterclockwise to unscrew.

  • Remove the trim around the shifter. You'll find seven clips, four on the passenger side and three on the driver's side. Curl your fingers under the edge of the trim and work your way down each side from front to back. If you cannot wedge your fingers under the edge, you can use a screwdriver but be careful not to scratch or damage the trim.

  • Examine the underside for sticky residue that might have seeped through the trim. Sometimes spilled coffee or soda will seep under the trim and stick the shifter in place. Remove sticky substances using a solvent cleaner and then try to move the shifter to see if the problem is resolved.

  • Press the brake and at the same time press the pink button on the back right-hand side of the shifter. Move the shifter out of park and into neutral. Leave it in neutral and you will be able to move the car. Use the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling.
