How to Program a Replacement Keyless Remote on a 1997 Buick LeSabre

Made by the Buick division of the General Motors Company, the Buick LaSabre is an entry-level, full-size vehicle that was produced from the 1959 to 2005 model years. A seventh-generation LaSabre, the 1997 model received a cosmetic upgrade from previous models. The 1997 Buick LaSabre also offers a keyless entry system as an optional feature.

Things You'll Need

  • Buick key
  • Keyless entry remote
  • Jumper wire
  • Insert the key to your 1997 Buick LeSabre into the vehicle's ignition cylinder. Leave the key in the "off" ignition position until you are instructed to turn it.

  • Locate the Data Link Port underneath the LeSabre's driver's side dash. Check to ensure that the "4" and "8" terminals contain metal contact pins. Consult the Data Link Port diagram included in the Resources section below to determine the position of the "4" and "8" terminals.

  • Connect the "4" and "8" Data Link Port contact pins using a jumper wire. Leave the "4" and "8" terminals connected until the programming process is complete. Note that the vehicle's power locks will perform an automatic locking and unlocking cycle when the contact pins have been successfully connected.

  • Close any open vehicle doors. Turn the key to the "run" ignition position without starting the engine. Wait for the vehicle's doors to lock automatically before proceeding.

  • Program the keyless remote to your 1997 Buick LeSabre by holding down the "lock" and "unlock" buttons until the vehicle's power locks cycle once more. Release the "lock" and "unlock" buttons.

  • Remove the jumper wire from the "4" and "8" terminals on the Data Link Port.
