How to Customize a Honda Element

The Honda Element is a boxy, practical and compact SUV. Like all Hondas, the Element is also a model that takes well to modifications, whether it's something as minor as a new shift knob or as dramatic as a body kit. You can also upgrade the interior, install larger wheels and get more horsepower from the motor.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Open-ended wrenches
  • Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
  • Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Torque wrench
  • Workshop manual
  • Customize the interior with accessories from specialty retailers such as H and A. (See Resources 1) There are many interior upgrades for the Element, including floor mats, interior trim kits and shift knobs. You can also install an aftermarket steering wheel and alloy pedals made by MOMO or Sparco, which are available through Andy's Auto Sport. (See Resources 3)

  • Upgrade the exterior. The Element’s unique, boxy styling takes well to the addition of an aftermarket grill. From there, you can install a carbon fiber hood or even a full body kit from online specialty retailers. (See Resources 3)

  • Replace the original wheels with larger aftermarket wheels. (See Resources 2) As with most cars, the Element leaves the factory with relatively small, narrow wheels. A set of larger diameter, wider wheels will help your Honda look better and handle better as well. Larger wheels will also allow you to install lower-profile tires for a more customized look.

  • Lower the suspension. A set of stiffer, lower Eibach springs will go a long ways towards making your Element look better, and like the wheels and tires, will help it handle better as well. Match the lowering springs with a set of adjustable performance shocks. These are available online through specialty retailers such as Vivid Racing.

  • Add more power to the engine. Start with a cold air intake system, which replaces the restrictive original air box with a large cone filter and larger diameter intake tubing. The dense, cold air that the motor gets will unleash more power. The next step would be to upgrade the stock exhaust system with a larger diameter exhaust such as one from Injen. You can also upgrade the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) that controls the engine, which will provide more horsepower and torque. (See Resources 3)
