How to Tune a Lexus IS

The Lexus IS series of vehicles has been in production since 2000. The IS series has become known for its accomplished performance, which combines strong acceleration with nimble handling. And it's all wrapped up in a package that represents the qualities we've come to expect from Lexus. Whether it's in IS250 guise or the ultimate IS-F version, this has also become a popular model for customizing and tuning.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set and ratchet
  • Specialty automotive tools
  • Lower the suspension. In stock form, the IS comes with a relatively high suspension, so one of the first steps that owners often take is lowering and stiffening the springs and shocks. This improves handling and grip as well as provides a better appearance. Tien (see Resources) makes some very good coilovers for the IS that will improve handling and also allow you to finely adjust the suspension.

  • Install larger wheels and tires. Even the wheels that comes on the IS-F can be upgraded and the stock tires that come on the IS can certainly stand to be replaced with some stickier ones. The Tire Rack (see Resources) has everything you need to replace the wheels and tires on any IS model. Volk Racing wheels are a popular choice for the IS.

  • Tune the motor. More power and acceleration is always a good thing, so increase the horsepower and torque output of the motor with a more free-flow exhaust and headers and larger intake. After that, upgrade the engine's computer to recalibrate how much fuel, spark and air the motor gets. On the more extreme end of the spectrum is a conversion to forced induction via supercharging or turbocharging, both of which rely on a compressor to force more air into the motor to make more power. This is the best way to get big power from an IS.

  • Increase the stopping ability. Brembo is the one name you need to know when it comes to increasing the stopping ability of the IS. Brembo makes a big brake for the IS that replaces the stock brakes with larger calipers, rotors and more performance-oriented pads. The kit also includes braided steel brake lines for a firmer pedal. If you want to keep it cheaper, simply replace the rotors with cross-drilled items and install better pads.

  • Customize the interior. Here you can replace the stock seats with deeper, one-piece racing buckets from Bride, a popular seat for Japanese tuner cars. After that, replace the stock steering wheel with one from Nardi, replace the stock pedals with drilled alloy items and install an aluminum shift knob.

  • Upgrade the exterior. The IS is a very handsome car in stock form, but can be improved upon with a few subtle changes to the exterior. Upgrade the front end with a more aggressive bumper and mesh grill. You can also smoke the headlights and taillights a darker color for a tuned look and black out the badges.
