How to Remove a Silencer Ring in a Dodge

On a Dodge Ram pickup equipped with a Cummins turbo diesel engine, there is a small silencer ring mounted on the turbo body that helps to quiet down the sound the turbo makes. Not everyone agrees that removing the silencer ring will add horsepower to your engine, but it will make the turbo sound louder than stock, which many people find desirable for its whining, winding sound.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Snap ring pliers
  • Pop the hood and locate the turbo on the engine block. This is on the passenger side of the engine, down by the exhaust manifold towards the rear of the engine block.

  • Unscrew the hose clamps that secure the turbo to the intake piping using the flathead screwdriver, then pull the intake piping back so that you have access to the inside of the turbo.

  • Locate the silencer ring on the inside of the turbo. This is located just forward of the fins on the inside of the turbo, and is held in place by a snap ring. Use the snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring from the turbo, then pull the silencer ring out with your hands.

  • Reinstall the intake piping to the turbo using the flathead screwdriver, then close the hood and start up the engine. Make sure that everything is running properly, and you should also hear an increased sound from the turbo.
