How to Customize a Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee oozes the classic styling of the classic Jeep Wranglers except they are built for family hauling and not quite ready for the off-road trail riding that the Wrangler was built for. It doesn't take too much customizing to get the family car ready for trail riding because it is already equipped with a competent engine and four-wheel drive. All you need to do to get your Jeep trail-ready is bolt on a few custom items.

Things You'll Need

  • Cherokee race seating (3 point harness or higher)
  • Winch
  • Winch supply kit
  • Electrically operated air compressor system
  • Tire repair kit
  • Replace the existing seats with race seats. Off-road trail riding can unfortunately lead to mishaps that require the need for at least three-point harness seating. This means you have two shoulder belts and one center crotch belt that all buckle together in front of your bellybutton. It's the same concept as a child's car seat. It's designed to keep you in the vehicle in the event of accident. These seats can be installed for front and rear to keep all passengers safe.

  • Install an electric winch to the front bumper of the Cherokee. A wench is a motorized tow line that is designed to pull a vehicle out of the mud if it gets stuck while trail riding. This is a must have device if you ever plan to trail ride alone or if you plan on riding on trails that have a lot of soft terrain. A winch supply kit is also recommended to ensure you have all of the right equipment to attach it to trees ir boulders if you need to.

  • Install an electrically-operated air compressor system. Punctured tires are common when trail riding especially if you will be lowering the pressure in your tires to gain additional traction. It's not always practical or possible to change a tire on the trail so being able to inflate a tire is very important. Carrying a tire patch kit is also recommended so you do not have to constantly stop to refill the tire. Standard tire repair kits that are available at auto supply stores.

  • Install a CB radio for emergencies. A CB radio, or citizens band radio, may seem outdated because of the wide use of cell phones, but many remote locations do not pick up cellular signals.00 CB radios are commonly used and monitored by off-road enthusiasts. Having a CB radio installed in your Cherokee can be the difference between getting assistance for your broken vehicle or walking for miles in the mud to get help.
