How to Install Satellite Radio on a 2007 BMW 328I

Satellite radio can add a whole new dimension of listening pleasure to your automobile's factory stereo system. Factory stereos in most new vehicles are able to receive satellite radio broadcasts and usually offer an introductory free trial at the time of purchase. In 2007, satellite radio was not standard equipment on the BMW 3-Series sedan. Considered an option at that time, it could have been purchased for an additional $595. If your factory stereo does not have satellite radio it can still be added.

Things You'll Need

  • Mounting kit
  • Factory radio
  • Allen wrench
  • Satellite radio monthly subscription

Preparation and Installation

  • Choose the satellite radio you are going to install in your vehicle. Your choice is either a "permanently mounted" or "plug and play" satellite radio. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages. A "permanently mounted" satellite radio, for example, gives the appearance of being professionally installed because all the wires are hidden behind the vehicle's dashboard, but cannot be transferred from your vehicle's stereo to your home stereo as the "plug and play" satellite radio can. If you purchase a "plug and play" satellite radio, you'll also need to purchase a mounting kit, which includes adapters, roof antenna and docking station.

  • Purchase the satellite radio that fits your needs and budget.

  • Connect the satellite radio to your vehicle's factory radio according to the manufacturer instructions that came with the satellite radio. This will involve removing the factory radio from the dashboard by removing the plastic caps on both sides of the radio and using a specially designed Allen wrench for BMW anti-theft radios to remove the bolts holding the radio to the dashboard.
