How to Repair a Serpentine Belt on a 2006 Grand Prix

The 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix has several engine options, including a 3.8-liter V6 engine, a 3.8-liter supercharged V6 engine and a 5.3-liter V8 engine. The 3.8-liter and 5.3-liter engines use a serpentine belt to drive the accessories on the front of the engine. The supercharged 3.8-liter engine has a second belt that drives the supercharger only. If you have a supercharged model, you will need to remove the supercharger belt before you can access the serpentine belt.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench set
  • Socket set
  • Breaker bar
  • You should open the hood of your Grand Prix and locate the negative battery terminal. Using a wrench, you should remove the clamp bolt on the battery cable end attached to the terminal. You should remove the cable from the battery.

  • If you have a 5.3-liter or nonsupercharged 3.8-liter engine in your car, you can skip this step. Otherwise, you should locate the serpentine belt in the front of the engine. If you have a supercharged 3.8-liter engine in your Grand Prix, locate the tensioner on the supercharger belt. Use a socket and ratchet to rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and remove the supercharger belt from the pulleys. Set the belt aside and rotate the tensioner clockwise. Let it rest in the free arm position.

  • Locate the serpentine belt tensioner on the front of the engine. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise with a socket and breaker bar, releasing the tension on the belt. Remove the belt from the pulleys and rotate the tensioner back to the free arm position for now.

  • Install the new belt onto all the pulleys except for the tensioner pulley. Be very careful to route the belt properly over the pulleys. If you are unsure of the path, you should consult a diagram on a sticker under the hood. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise, slide the belt over the tensioner pulley and rotate it clockwise. You should tighten the belt.

  • You should move to the supercharger tensioner. You should use a socket and breaker bar to rotate it counterclockwise. Install the supercharger belt back onto the supercharger pulleys. You should rotate the tensioner clockwise, allowing it to tighten the belt.

  • You should install the negative battery cable on the negative battery terminal, followed by the clamp bolt that holds the cable end on the terminal. Tighten the bolt with a wrench and close the hood.
