How to Mount Something on the Dash of a Car Without Leaving a Mark

If you need to mount your GPS inside your car or you would like to place your MP3 player somewhere where it won't be knocked around, mounting your device on the dashboard may be the best answer. Although a dashboard usually lacks any kind of top holder or shelf, it can be used as a base for a number of different kinds of mounts, all of which can be removed without leaving any kind of mark on the dashboard.

  • Use a friction mount for your dash. These come as pads as well as tripods for GPS and other devices. They use their weight and grip to stay in place on your dashboard and can easily be removed without leaving any marks.

  • Use adhesive putty. Adhesive putty can be purchased from an office supply store and can be used to keep a device mounted onto your dash. Place the putty under the base of the device you would like to mount and apply pressure to anchor the putty to the dashboard and base of the device. The putty comes off easily and any residue can be wiped away with a cloth, leaving no marks.

  • Use a suction mount. A suction mount can be used to support a tripod, holder or pad to hold whatever you would like on your dashboard. A suction mount requires a flat, smooth surface, which not all dashboards have.
