How to Install Window Tint

Professionally tinting windows can cost over $300. But, for less than $50 you can tint the windows in your own car. Window tint offers many benefits, including privacy and preventing sunlight from heating up your car. Before you apply any window tint to your car, make sure that you check with local regulations regarding legal percentage limit of window tint. For example, a 50 percent limit means that you can have window tint on your windows so long as 50 percent of light can pass through the window.

Things You'll Need

  • Squeegee
  • Detergent water in a spray bottle (distilled water and dish soap 70/30 mix)
  • Utility knife
  • Window tint film
  • Soft scrub pad
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Bondo card
  • Spray the exterior of the window to be tinted with the detergent water. Allow the window to dry.

  • Wet the exterior of the window with your soapy solution. Lay out the film on the glass with liner side facing out.

  • Level the bottom edge of the liner with the bottom edge of the window. Wet the liner side of the film and squeegee gently to hold the film in position.

  • Line up the bottom edge of the window tint film with the bottom edge of the window. Make sure the window tint film is covering the whole window. Squeegee the film onto the window gently to hold the film in place while cutting.

  • Carefully use the utility knife to cut off all excess window tint film. Try to cut as close to the edge of the window as possible as the exterior of the window will be the same shape as the interior. Peel off the film from the window when done cutting.

  • Clean the interior of the window with the detergent water. Use the soft scrub pad to ensure all dirt is removed.

  • Use a squeegee to remove water from the window. Wrap the microfiber cloth around a bondo card and clean under all gaskets around the window.

  • Liberally apply the detergent water to the interior of the window.

  • Put a piece of tape on each side of the window tint film near a corner. Use these tape pieces like handles to make pulling film from the liner easier. As you pull the film from the liner, spray the film with the detergent water.

  • Align the top of the film with the top of the window. Use the squeegee to push the film firm onto the window. As you are pushing the film with the squeegee you will work the water out from between the film and window. Move down the window applying the film in this manner.

  • Wrap the microfiber cloth in the bondo card and soak up any water that is along the edges of the window.
