How to Remove the Airbag From a Chevy Pickup

The airbag in a Chevrolet pickup is designed to protect you from harm in a front-end collision. But if the airbag system is malfunctioning or if the airbag appears to be damaged, you'll need to remove and replace the assembly. This is not easy, but if you know the tricks, it can be done in about 30 minutes. In this case, we're removing the driver's-side airbag from a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado. The process is similar for other vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end wrench set
  • Small-blade flathead screwdriver
  • Pop the hood and disconnect the negative terminal on the battery using an open-end wrench. Allow the battery to sit disconnected for at least 15 minutes before proceeding, as you want to let the charging system discharge.

  • Place the key in the ignition and turn it to the "on" position. The vehicle should not turn on, but you should be able to turn the steering wheel freely. Turn the wheel so that the top is at the 9 o'clock position.

  • Feel around the back of the steering wheel to locate two holes on either side. Place the flathead screwdriver in one of the holes and push it forward to pop the airbag out on one side.

  • Hold the freed side in place with one hand, and then push in the other hole . The airbag should pop out of the steering wheel.

  • Pull the airbag off of the wheel and unplug the airbag from the steering wheel. To store the airbag, make sure that the face of the airbag points up in the air. Otherwise the airbag could become a projectile if accidentally activated.
