How to Add Sirius Satellite Radio to My OEM System

Car units usually come with a radio and CD or MP3 player already installed in the dashboard. You can install Sirius satellite radio as an aftermarket option if it was not included with the original car by installing the Sirius car package. The antenna for the device rests on the roof of your car. A wire runs from this antenna to the radio device, which is mounted on a flat space on your dashboard. This allows you to remove Sirius or install it in another car without messing with the original car radio setup.

  • Go online or call Sirius to activate your service if you have not done so already. The radio device won't work until activated.

  • Connect the Sirius radio mounting system to the interior of your vehicle. As this is an aftermarket addition, you have multiple options on mounts types. Some mounts use a strong adhesive that you press down on the dashboard. You can also use a window suction mount that attaches to the front center window. The third option is a vent mount that clips onto an air conditioner vent. Connect whichever option you have and attach the necessary screws that come with the mount package.

  • Set the magnetic mount on the top of your vehicle. The best location depends on the type of car you have. For coupes, sedans and SUVs, attach the antenna on the roof near the front or back window. For convertibles, put it just below the back window on the trunk door. For pickup trucks, attach it only on the roof just above the front window. All antennas need to have about 3 inches of space.

  • Run the antenna line to the dashboard where the mount is installed. You can hide the wiring inside the window and door lining to keep it from dangling in your way.

  • Connect your Sirius device to your car radio. Some units use only the power connector to transfer signals, while other units require a radio cassette tape or auxiliary input cable. The cassette goes into your car radio cassette player and the other end plugs into the back of the Sirius unit. The aux-in cable connects to the car stereo input, while the other end connects to the Sirius device.

  • Attach the Sirius radio to the mount, then plug in the power adapter and any other connectors. Press the power button to turn on the Sirius radio.

  • Set the radio station if you did not connect the cassette or auxiliary input. Find a local radio frequency that isn't being used and save that as one of your car radio presets. Press and hold the "Menu" button on your Sirius radio and select "Settings," "FM Transmitter" and "Set FM Presets." Highlight the radio frequency you want to use and press the "Select" button to save.
