What Are the Biggest Size Rims to Put on a 1999 Dodge Intrepid?

Big rims don't always look right on older vehicles; most of them just weren't designed with those proportions in mind. The Intrepid, though, was well ahead of its time compared to other cars designed in the 1990s. Combined with its Le Mans-inspired styling, the Intrepid and its 300M sibling manage to look pretty contemporary with somewhat larger wheels and tires.

Rims to Fit

  • The Intrepid came with either 205/70R15 or 225/60R16 tires, depending on the rims specified. So, the safe outside tire diameter, as engineered by Chrysler, comes in at 26.3 inches. If you're sticking with the narrowest stock width of 205 mm, and you're willing to accept the harsh ride and potential rim damage that comes with 20-series tires, you can use 22-inch rims with 205/20R22 tires. A 30-series tire on the same rim will give you an outside diameter of 26.8 inches; that puts the top of the tire a mere 0.25-inch closer to the top of the wheel arch, which shouldn't cause rubbing under anything but the most extreme circumstances. If you're willing to drop width down to 175 mm, you can just barely step up to 24-inch rims by using 175/20R24 tires. That's extremely marginal though, and really only suitable for show cars. If you want something that's going to perform well, ride tolerably and not make your car look like a cartoon, stay with 20-inch rims and 225/35R20 tires. A set of 20s will give you a classy, just-right look that works well with the car's proportions.
