How to Store Tires & Rims

Storing tires and rims properly is essential. This will prolong the life of the tire by preventing cracking and deterioration of the rubber. Proper storage will also ensure that your rims will not be damaged. Make sure to have a suitable spot in your house, preferably in a garage or basement since tires should not be left outside. Also make sure that tires do not remain stored for an extended period of time since the rubber will eventually start to degrade.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Car wash soap
  • Brush
  • Towel
  • Plastic bag
  • Wash your rims and tires before storing them. Make sure to remove all dirt, sediment, and brake dust from the wheels. A combination of water, car wash soap, and a towel will do the trick. Also use a brush to clean the sidewalls of the tire. A clean tire will last longer and prevent cracking and deterioration. Allow the tires to dry once they are clean.

  • Place the tires in a large, opaque plastic bag. Trash bags work well for this application. These bags will prevent moisture from affecting the tires and also prevent oil evaporation from the rubber of the tires.

  • Place the tires in a dry, cool spot. Tires can be stacked on one another but try to limit the stack to just two tires, since any more than that can be easily knocked over. Garages and basements are two appropriate spots to store your tires and rims.
