Hot Tank Engine Cleaning

Car enthusiasts not only make sure their engine parts are adjusted and functioning well, but are concerned with the overall cleanliness of the parts. Hot tanks are an option for those looking to thoroughly clean out oil buildup.

Function

  • A hot tank is a square or rectangular soak tank containing a cast iron cleaner. Engine parts, or even an entire engine, can be placed inside for deep cleaning in the engine's interior cavities.

Features

  • Hot tanks use the heated solutions, typically between 170 degrees Fahrenheit to 180 degrees Fahrenheit, to essentially melt the old oil and other build up on the parts. If a lower temperature is used, such as 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the buildup may not be completely cleaned away. In addition, higher temperatures contribute to evaporation of the solution.

Warning

  • Parts that are made of aluminum or zinc cannot be soaked in a hot tank. The solution will melt the material. Only iron and steel are recommended for these cleaning procedures.
