How to Clean Plastic Headlamp Lenses

Plastic headlamp lenses, or headlights, can become scratched, faded and dull from oxidation and weathering. Rain, wind, sun, salt and road conditions all contribute to this wear. Regular washing won't always restore the finish and clarity to your plastic headlights. Plastic polish will remove the old, oxidized layer of plastic, revealing clean and shiny headlights. Clean them frequently to maintain the overall look of your car.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Car wash soap
  • Scrub sponge
  • Garden hose
  • Plastic polish
  • 2 or 3 soft cloths
  • Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and car wash soap according to the package's directions. You can use 2 tsp. of dish detergent in place of the car wash soap.

  • Dip a scrub sponge into the solution and wash the headlights thoroughly. Press hard to remove any tough dirt or grime.

  • Rinse the headlights with a garden hose.

  • Apply a small amount of plastic polish to a damp cloth according to the package instructions. Polish the headlamp lenses in circular motions, working on one small area at a time.

  • Rinse the headlamp lenses with the garden hose.

  • Dry the lenses with a clean, soft cloth.
