How to Clean a Jeep

The canvas top and plastic windows of a soft top Jeep have to be fairly durable and waterproof to survive the elements. Regardless of their ability to handle weather, canvas Jeep tops are finicky in that they don't react well to harsh chemical cleansers. Care must be taken not only in regards to the cleanser used on a soft top, but the manner in which that cleanser is applied.

Soft top cleaning aside, the cleaning of a Jeep interior and the metal exterior from the top down does not differ from the cleaning of other types of vehicles.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean, soft cloth rags
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Laundry detergent
  • Dish detergent
  • Clean soap water bucket
  • Automotive canvas cleaner (available in auto parts stores)
  • Large sponge
  • Hose with adjustable spray nozzle attachment
  • Remove all of the floor mats from the Jeep interior and vacuum the floor, including underneath the seats, with a vacuum attachment. Afterward, while you still have the vacuum plugged in, vacuum the floor mats before placing them back on the floor. Make sure you also have vacuumed the stick shift area between the driver and passenger seats.

  • Wipe the dashboard, leather or plastic upholstery, interior door panels and the stick shift area between the driver and passenger seats with a clean cloth rag dipped in a mixture of laundry detergent and warm water. After cleaning a specific area, make sure to dry that area by wiping it down again with a clean, dry cloth rag.

  • Wipe the plastic windows with a clean cloth rag dipped in a mixture of dish detergent and warm water. Wipe in a side-to-side motion and make sure to thoroughly, but gently, rinse the detergent off the windows by using a spray nozzle attachment on a hose.

  • Spray a specially formulated canvas cleaner to the Jeep top. Wipe off the spray and the residue it brings up to the surface of the canvas with a clean cloth rag.

  • Spray the metal exterior of the car, from the bottom of the canvas top, down to the wheels, with a spray attachment on a hose. The body of the Jeep can be sprayed more aggressively than the plastic windows of the Jeep top. Apply a mild commercial car wash soap to the body of the Jeep with a large sponge. Apply the soap in a clockwise motion. Car wash soaps are inexpensive and can be easily found in auto parts stores and department stores.

After applying soap to all exterior metal areas of the Jeep, rinse it off by spraying it thoroughly with water.
