How to Clean Car Carpet from Winter Salt

While winter salt protects you from slips and falls on ice and snow, it can also be a cold weather annoyance when it comes to cleaning car carpet. The salt easily sticks to your shoes and quickly accumulates in vehicle carpeting. The salt leaves messy white stains, which, when mixed with the sloppy wet snow, will deteriorate the appearance of the car interior. This makes it important to know how to clean the carpet effectively to remove any salt that has accumulated inside the car.

Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum with hose attachment
  • Auto carpet cleaner
  • Sponge or brush
  • Clean the carpeting with a vacuum cleaner to collect as much loose winter salt as possible. Use a hose attachment to pick up the loose salt you find in the cracks and crevices of the carpet.

  • Spray the carpeting with foaming carpet cleaner. Read the use instructions on the bottle, which will typically direct you to let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before scrubbing.

  • Scrub the foamy cleaner into the carpeting with a sponge or brush. Use small circular strokes which will allow you to cover the entire carpet effectively. Repeat until you have cleaned the entire carpet.

  • Vacuum the carpeting once more to collect all residue that you have pulled out of the carpet, and repeat this process as needed when winter salt accumulates in the car.
