Car Window Cleaning Tips

Car windows may not draw the most attention when people admire a passing car, but it's one of the first things they notice if the rest of the car is sparkling and the windows are streaked and looking like they need a good cleaning. There are techniques, however, that can make those windows shine and be clear of pesky streaks.

When and Where

  • It's not just about getting the windows clean, it's about getting them cleaned right. Anyone can spray household window cleaner on their car windows and walk away with streaked glass. Professionals, like those at The Total Pros Training Center and Car Club, know the importance of clean and streak-free windows. According to the Total Pros website, clean the windows after cleaning the rest of the car, which will keep you from accidentally bumping the glass and leaving scuff marks behind. In addition, clean the windows out of direct sunlight because the added heat will evaporate the water out of cleaners quickly, leaving an unwanted residue behind.

The Cleaners

  • Never use household glass cleaners on your car. They are not designed to repel water, such as rain, and have agents like ammonia in them that are harmful for the tint in windows. Instead, consult with an auto parts store employee about what it carries that would work for your car. Vehicles with complete tints will require special cleaning solutions like Meguiar's NXTT Generation Glass Cleaner, which is also great for clear windows and guarantees a streak-free shine. Other cleaners, such as RainX, are quality compounds for use on vehicle windows, as is GlassAddict.

The Tools

  • You only really need two tools when cleaning windows: A cloth for washing and a cloth for drying. Avoid paper towel as it will crumble with moisture and leave specks on the glass. Mobile Works suggests using a surgical towel for cleaning as it is capable of removing grime. Use a waffle-weave microfiber cloth for drying and buffing.

To clean the window, just spray a light mist over the entire window, but not to the point that liquid is running down it in streams. Wipe with the surgical towel, scrubbing where needed, and leave a little moisture behind. Buff with the microfiber towel and absorb the remaining moisture. Clean both inside and outside and don't forget to roll the windows down slightly so you can clean the top of them.
