How to Clean Brake Dust From Chrome Wheels

Chrome wheels look good on a car when they are shiny and clean. There are specific cleaners designed for chrome wheels that will clean and shine them without damaging the chrome. One of the biggest challenges is getting brake dust off without pitting or scratching the chrome. You could spend a few extra dollars and purchase a cleaner made specifically for this task or you could simply follow the steps below to keep your chrome wheels clean, shining, and free of brake dust.

Things You'll Need

  • Dawn dish detergent liquid
  • Hot water
  • Water hose
  • Bucket
  • Sponge
  • Microfiber towel
  • Use the water hose to spray away loose dirt and debris from the wheels.

  • Mix 1/2 cup of liquid Dawn dishwashing detergent into a bucket of hot water. For fewer bubbles, add the detergent after the water.

  • Use a sponge to clean the wheels with the hot water mixture. Dawn is a grease cutting detergent and works wonders on brake dust while being gentle with your chrome. If the brake dust is stubborn allow the cleaner to sit for a few minutes and sponge again.

  • Rinse the wheels with the water hose. Make sure that you rinse from the top down, so that any dirt washes off of the wheels.

  • Dry the wheels with a microfiber towel and they will look as shiny and clean as if a professional had cleaned them.
