How to Use Household Bleach to Clean an RV's Rubber Roof

Recreational vehicles often feature rubber roofs, which are thin protective barriers that are put on top of plywood. It is important that harsh chemicals are not used on the rubber, as these solvents can break down the rubber, causing it to deteriorate. Bleach is actually not recommended for cleaning an RV's rubber roof, as it can penetrate rubber, loosening the glue that attaches the roof to the plywood and causing the roof to bubble. Mild dishwashing detergent is recommended instead.

Things You'll Need

  • Dishwashing detergent Bucket Long-handled brush Ladder Hose Water
  • Squeeze approximately 1/2 cup of dishwashing detergent into a bucket. Dishwashing detergent has a degreasing agent that can clean the rubber without damaging it.

  • Add water until bucket is sudsy and nearly full.

  • Make sure ladder is secure. Bring up the bucket and brush with you and place them on the ladder shelf.

  • Dip the brush into the soapy water and begin to scrub the rubber roof all the way around the RV. Move the ladder along with you as your work your way around.

  • Spray the roof off with water from a hose while standing on the ladder to get the roof nice and clean.
