How to Do Custom Car Upholstery

Sometimes your vehicle's upholstery starts to look faded, or it may have holes in it from years of wear and tear. If you know how to sew you can probably reupholster your vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Upholstery material
  • Wrench/pliers/socket set
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing machine
  • Heavy-duty thread
  • Scissors
  • Measure the car seats that you want to reupholster. Measure each seat from top to bottom and from side to side. You want to see how much material you are going to need. Then you can pick your material; it can be vinyl, leather or cloth, according to your preference. Just be sure you pick a fabric that can stand up to hard use.

  • Disassemble the seats. Some older-model cars have hog rings to hold the marterial to the base of the seat; you can remove them with needlenose pliers. Newer cars have a plastic guard that attaches the material to the base; that will usually pop out.

  • Separate the seams of the material, using a seam ripper. Do not throw away the vinyl/cloth upholstery, because this will be your pattern.

  • Lay your pattern pieces out flat on the new upholstery material. Your old material may have holes or be just plan worn out; you can make adjustments to the pattern if you need too. Use the pattern to cut the material, and stitch it together using your sewing machine; be sure to use heavy-duty thread because you want the material to stay together under stress. If you use, for example, cotton or all-purpose thread, the upholstery will just come apart, because these threads are not strong enough to upholstery together.
