How to Install Car Battery Terminals

The battery cables on your car have a set of terminals that connect them to the battery, delivering the electricity from the battery to the starter or from the alternator to the starter. If the terminals are corroded on or have sustained damage, they will not deliver the electricity properly, and your car will experience hard starts or a battery that will not stay charged. Replacing these damaged cable terminals with aftermarket terminals is the simplest solution to resolve this problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Wire or cable cutters
  • Cable strippers
  • Utility knife
  • Open the hood of your car or truck and locate the battery. Starting with the negative battery cable, remove the retaining bolts from the battery cable terminal, using a wrench, then lift the cable off the battery and move it aside, so that it does not touch the battery while you are working.

  • Cut the battery cable right behind the old battery terminal, using a set of wire cutters. Discard the old terminal. The new terminal has a groove and a strap with two mounting bolts that hold it attached to the battery. You need to remove enough insulation from the battery cable to allow the bare wire to sit in the groove completely.

  • Strip the insulation off the battery cable with a set of cable strippers or with a utility knife. Remove about ½-inch of insulation from the wire. Remove the two bolts and the strap from the new terminal and lay the cable into the groove that runs down the back of the terminal.

  • Place the strap over the cable and install the two retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts with a wrench until the cable is secure and cannot slide out of the terminal. Repeat the process for the opposite terminal.

  • Position the positive cable terminal onto the positive battery post and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Install the negative battery cable terminal on the negative post of the battery. Tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench until it is secure.

  • Close the hood of your car or truck and start it to verify that the terminals are securely attached to the cables and to the battery posts.
