When you have to spend a lot of time behind the steering wheel of your car, a comfortably soft car seat makes the difference between traveling in luxury and just making it to your destination. For extra comfort, perform regular maintenance to your car seat's surface and take advantage of accessories. You can add extra softness to standard adult car seats, infant seats and booster seats.
Clean and condition your car's leather seats. Clean them with a leather cleaner, then massage leather conditioner into the seats. These supplies will not only renew and restore your leather seats, they will also make them softer.
Replace the foam cushioning inside of the seat to make it softer. This requires professional automotive upholstery skills. If you cannot do the job yourself, hire a professional automotive re-upholsterer to restore your car seats to their original cushioning.
Sew seat pads to build up a car seat that has lost some of its foam cushioning. This will save you from having to spend money on having your car seats restored. Make the cushions to the thickness you want using high-density foam. Wrap it in batting, and cover it with a custom fabric seat cover.
Buy extra-soft seat covers. Some seat covers cover the entire seat area, including the back and headrest, while others merely cover the seat's base. Soft seat cushions made with foam, batting or a comfort gel can significantly increase your comfort level while sitting in a car.
Remove the existing car seat cover, and make a pattern of the car seat's shape.
Cut out a cover and backing for the car seat using fire-rated upholstery fabric regulated for use in a child car seat, or use the existing cover and simply restore it.
Sew the cover pieces together to make the cover. Turn the car seat cover inside out.
Cut out the fire-rated foam and batting using scissors, and insert it into the car seat cover. Sew it closed, then sew the openings for the seatbelts to pass through.
Place the car or booster seat cover in its base, and secure it in place to the car seat frame.
