How to Replace the Driver's Seat in a Ford Mustang

Removing the front driver's seat in a Mustang is rarely necessary. However, doing so is often required if you want to replace the carpeting inside the vehicle, to reupholster or repair the seat or to repair a damaged floor pan. Additionally, the seat should be removed if the paint is stripped off the vehicle with blast media in order to protect the surface of the seat. Follow the steps below to replace the driver's seat in a Ford Mustang.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • 1/2" socket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Lift the Mustang with a jack and support the vehicle with four jack stands properly rated to safely hold the car.

  • Locate the four rubber grommets underneath the car on the driver's side under the front seat. The grommets are rubber seals about three inches in diameter.

  • Remove each of the four grommets by wedging a flat head screwdriver between the lip of each grommet and the floorboard, and then turning the head of the screwdriver from a horizontal to a vertical position. Removing the grommets will expose the four nuts that hold the seat to the floorboard.

  • Remove each of the exposed nuts with a 1/2" socket connected to a socket wrench. Turn the socket in a counterclockwise direction. Note that removing the nuts also frees the four wavy washers that fit between the nut and the floor pan.

  • Lift the driver's seat straight up from inside the Mustang and pull the seat out of the car.

  • Install the seat by lowering the four studs at the bottom of the seat through the four holes in the floorboard.

  • Slide a wavy washer over each stud from underneath the car and install the nut onto each stud with the 1/2" socket used to remove the nut in Step 4.

  • Replace the rubber grommets over the nut access holes by simply pressing them into place.
