How to Check the Oil Level in a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1996 model year was a year of big comebacks for the Camaro lineup, as the famed RS and SS variants returned. The RS was an appearance package on V-6 models, and the SS package bumped the 5.7-liter engine to 305 horsepower -- the first time the Camaro crested 300 ponies since 1971 -- and added 17-inch wheels with Z-rated tires.

Checking the Oil Level

  • If you recently drove the Camaro, let it sit for about five minutes before checking the oil. Open the hood and pull out the yellow-handled engine oil dipstick from the driver side of the 3.8-liter engine or on the passenger side of the 5.7-liter engine. Wipe the oil from the tip of the dipstick, using a clean, lint-free cloth, and reinsert the dipstick fully. Pull the dipstick out again and verify that the oil is within the crosshatched area on the end of the dipstick. If the oil is below this range, add new engine oil until the oil level reaches this range.
