How to Replace the Taillights in a Kia Spectra

If you find one of your Kia Spectra's taillights has burned out, quickly replacing it yourself will prevent you from getting a "fix-it" ticket. Once you have a new replacement bulb, you can quickly install it with just a screwdriver. Please note, these instructions only apply to Spectra models made before 2005.

Things You'll Need

  • #1157 replacement bulb
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench
  • Remove the keys from the ignition and engage the emergency brake for safety.

  • Use the trunk release latch to open the trunk, and then step out of the car.

  • Remove the two retaining screws from the top edge of the rear combination light assembly. Then, remove the service cover from the inside of the trunk and extract the two interior retaining bolts.

  • Pull the assembly away from the car, and then disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the assembly. Once it's free, remove the assembly completely from the vehicle.

  • Press the taillight bulb socket into the assembly and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Then, repeat this process with the defective bulb to remove it from the socket.

  • Insert a new bulb into the socket and reinstall the socket in the assembly. Reattach the electrical connector to the assembly.

  • Test the new bulb to make sure it works before bolting the assembly back into place, replacing the service cover and closing the trunk.
