How to Replace an Upper Brake Bulb in a 2001 Lincoln LS

The Lincoln LS was produced from 1999 until 2006. The 2001 Lincoln LS was equipped with a 3.0-liter V-6 as the base model engine, which produced 210 horsepower. An optional 252-horsepower, 3.9-liter V-8 was available as an upgrade. The upper brake bulb is commonly referred to as the "third brake light," but it is technically named the "high-mount brake light." The high-mount brake light in the 2001 LS has multiple light bulbs in one fixture. Replacing the bulb can be accomplished in a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • New light bulbs (Bulb No. 3156)
  • Paper towels or clean rag
  • Open one of the rear doors of the LS. Position yourself on your knees in the back seat, facing the rear deck or rear dash.

  • Remove the cover from the high-mount brake light assembly, by hand. Pull the cover toward the front of the vehicle. Do not pull extremely hard, or you will break the clips that mount through the deck from the trunk.

  • Pull the old light bulbs out of the high-mount assembly. Wrap the new bulbs in a paper tower prior to picking them up. Insert new bulbs into the assembly, by hand. Do not touch the bulb lenses with your hands directly.

  • Install the high-mount cover onto the rear deck and push the cover toward the rear glass to lock it in place.
