How to Reset the Change Oil Light on My 2005 Pontiac Grand Am

The 2005 model year marked the end of the Grand Am's run in Pontiac's lineup. The 2005 model year Grand Am only came as a coupe and was fitted with a 175-horsepower, 3.4-liter V-6 engine. This vehicle came equipped with General Motors' "Engine Oil Life System." This system monitors mileage driven and alerts the driver, via an on-dash display, when it's time for an oil change. General Motors recommends changing the oil within 600 miles of the light turning on. Following a precise set of steps resets this system after performing an oil change.

  • Sit in the driver's seat and insert the ignition key into the Grand Am's ignition.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "On" position, but leave the engine off.

  • Push and release the pedal three times within five seconds of turning the key to the "On" position.

  • Listen for the chime indicating the resetting of the oil life system.

  • Turn the ignition to the "Off" position.

  • Start the Grand Am's engine and check that the "Oil Change" light remains off. Turn the engine off and repeat Steps 2 through 5 if the light remains on.
