How to Clean Duramax Injectors

Keeping your fuel injectors clean is the key to maintaining your Duramax engine's performance. Clogged injectors not only contribute to lowered fuel economy, they also reduce the amount of power your Duramax engine is able to produce. The following process lets you clean the injectors in a manner that is more direct than adding injector cleaner into the fuel tank. A set of quick disconnect tools are required for this process.

Things You'll Need

  • Quick disconnect tools
  • Rubber fuel line, 3/8-inch diameter
  • Rubber fuel line, 1/2-inch diameter
  • Injector cleaner
  • Large container
  • Open the hood and locate the 3/8-inch diameter return line and 1/2-inch diameter suction lines at the rear of the engine. Use a set of quick disconnect tools to disconnect these lines.

  • Connect a long length of 3/8-inch diameter rubber fuel line tubing to the return line and 1/2-inch diameter fuel line tubing to the suction line. Use hose clamps to secure the connections. You will need at least eight to ten feet of rubber fuel line.

  • Mix 1/2-gallon of clean diesel fuel with 13 ounces of injector cleaner in a large clean container. Place both fuel lines into the container and set it a safe distance from the engine and any other heat source.

  • Start the engine and let it idle for as long as the fuel supply in the container allows. When the container is empty, turn off the engine and remove the lines from the container. Remove the hose clamps and disconnect the rubber fuel line tubing from the suction and return lines.

  • Reconnect the return and suction lines to the injector rail. Start the engine and check for leaks. Close the hood and shut off the engine when finished.
