Cleaning Instructions for a 6.0 Turbo

The 6.0 Turbo is a diesel engine designed and manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. The 6-liter, 8-cylinder engine powers Ford's F-series Super Duty pickup trucks and Econoline cargo vans. You may notice excessive carbon buildup on the engine surface and want to clean it off, or perhaps you have decided to restore the diesel engine to use in another truck or van. Regardless of your reason, learn the proper method to clean the 6.0 Turbo engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Bucket
  • Wire brush
  • Rags
  • Carburetor cleaner
  • Spray lubricant
  • Open the hood of the Ford vehicle. If you have recently driven the vehicle, allow up to an hour for the 6.0 Turbo to cool completely before you begin the cleaning process. Fill a bucket with warm water, and submerge a wire brush into the water.

  • Scrub the 6.0 Turbo engine with the wire brush, breaking up and removing large carbon deposits. Wipe away loose debris with a clean rag. Continue this process until you have removed all large and loose debris from the engine.

  • Spray the surface of the Turbo with carburetor cleaner. Use a rag to cover the entire surface with cleaner, including crevices and hard-to-reach spots. Allow the cleaner to penetrate the surface for 10 minutes.

  • Clear the rag and wire brush of debris with the bucket of water. Dip the wire brush and rag into the bucket of water and wipe the engine clean. This will clear away remaining rust, dirt and grime. Use the wire brush in the crevices and corners as well. Continue this process until you have removed all dirt from the Turbo. Allow the engine to air dry.

  • Spray lubricant onto the engine surface to prevent future buildup and rust. Rub the lubricant into the engine surface with a clean rag.
