Your Chevy Lumina's engine can occasionally be prone to freezing in extreme weather conditions. In order to protect your engine from the cold, freeze plugs are installed during your car's manufacturing. Eventually these plugs will need to be repaired and replaced due to leaks, rust, or corrosion. When replacing a single freeze plug, you may not have to remove your engine, depending on which freeze plug you're replacing. However, replacing multiple freeze plugs will require you to remove your engine block.
Strap your safety goggles on. Working with engine and coolant departments can create unsafe working conditions from unresolved engine pressure.
Locate your Chevy Lumina's freeze plugs. On the engine block, you'll find three on each side of your engine block, below the spark plugs.
Dislodge your freeze plugs with your hammer and wedge. Put the tip of your wedge on the edge of your freeze plug and hit the handle with your hammer. Excessive force is not required. Increase the amount of force you use until the freeze plugs buckle free.
Pull the freeze plugs free with your pliers. Don't worry about damaging the freeze plugs, they are to be discarded and replaced.
Wipe the holes of the freeze plugs ports with your emery cloth. Rust and other corrosion will still be left on the freeze plug ports. Using an emery cloth will effectively clean the freeze plug holes without damaging your engine.
Install the new replacement freeze plugs in your Chevy Lumina. Use the seal driver to correctly fit the freeze plugs in place. If you need more force to install your freeze plugs, use your hammer and apply enough force by hitting the handle of the seal driver, increasing when necessary, to correctly fit the freeze plugs.
