How to Remove the Alternator in a 2001 Chrysler

Changing the alternator on a vehicle is a near-universal procedure, varying little from one model of car to another. The alternator on a 2001 Chrysler commonly sits on the side of the engine block. Two bolts secure the alternator to the engine and one belt connects to its pulley. A wire harness mounted to the alternator is responsible for transferring power from the alternator to the battery.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Locking pliers
  • Ratchet set
  • Remove the clamps to which the battery cables are connected. Loosen the screws on the clamps and pull the cables off both outputs.

  • Lock the locking pliers onto the tension pulley and pull the tension pulley with them to loosen the belt. Pull the belt off the alternator's pulley.

  • Remove the screw that secures the wire harness to the alternator using the screwdriver. Remove the bolts from the upper and lower rear of the alternator that hold the alternator to the engine block. Pull the alternator off the engine.
