How to Run an Outboard Motor Dry

The last thing you want to do is get stranded out on the water with a broken-down outboard motor. That's why after every outing, you'll want to run the motor dry once it's out of the water to flush out the system and get rid of any debris and dirt that may have been picked up in the water. However, it's not as easy as simply starting the outboard motor and revving it. In order to prevent damaging the motor or water pump, it's important to follow some key steps.

Things You'll Need

  • Outboard motor flusher
  • Garden hose
  • Clean water source
  • Connect the outboard motor flusher, also known as "rabbit ears," to the water intake valve on the outboard motor by pushing one end of the outboard motor flusher over the intake valve.

  • Attach a garden hose to the other end of the outboard motor flusher and turn on the spigot.

  • Start the outboard motor. The water pump will now pull water from the garden hose, through the outboard motor's intake system. This will keep the motor cool while it's running.

  • Turn off the outboard motor and disconnect the outboard motor flusher once you are finished running the motor.
