How to Install a Power Steering Pump on a Ford Focus

The power steering pump on your Ford Focus allows you to turn the vehicle easily. Without the power steering pump, in fact, nothing would be there to help you steer. If you have a leak on your power steering pump, this is not only a problem; it is a serious fire hazard. You can buy a new power steering pump at a super center, auto parts store or online. Installation is fairly straightforward once you have removed the old pump.

Things You'll Need

  • Large cup
  • Wrench
  • New pump
  • Power steering fluid
  • Open the hood of the Ford Focus. Locate the power steering pump on the driver's side of the engine compartment connected to the firewall.

  • Place the large cup under the pump. Use a wrench to loosen the nuts in plain view on the pump that are holding the pump fluid lines in place. Pull the lines out of the pump, and drain the pump into the cup.

  • Remove the nuts that are holding the pump onto the firewall, using the wrench. Remove the belt on the pump from the pulley. Pull the old pump from the engine housing.

  • Secure the new pump onto the firewall with the securing nut. Replace the belt to the pulley on the pump. Replace the lines to the correct holes on the pump. Tighten the nuts on the firewall and pump lines. Fill the pump to the "Full" line on the pump, using power steering fluid.
