How to Lift a Chevrolet Trailblazer

If you ever plan on saving with home repairs, you will need to know how to lift your Chevrolet Trailblazer. There are many easy DIY maintenance tasks, such as changing the Trailblazer's engine oil and removing and replacing old oil filters. These tasks and others, however, require safe access to the Trailblazer's underside. Using only the jack provided with the vehicle is unsafe. A hand-cranking jack will never fully secure the heavy sports utility vehicle. The best option involves using vehicle stands.

Things You'll Need

  • Vehicle stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Cranking jack
  • Service ramps
  • Bring the Trailblazer to a full stop on level ground. If you are facing an emergency with a blown-out tire, try coasting the Chevy along the shoulder of the road until suitable ground is found.

  • Engage the parking brake. If your Trailblazer has a stick-shifting transmission, shift into reverse and turn the engine off. If your trailblazer utilizes an automatic transmission, move the shifter into "park" and turn the vehicle off.

  • Select the first area on the Trailblazer that needs to be lifted. If you are dealing with a flat tire, it needs to be the wheel with the damaged tire. If you are in your home garage and raising the vehicle as part of repairs, it may not matter which tire you start with.

  • Place wheel chocks in front and behind the tire diagonal from the wheel about to be lifted. So if you are lifting the front driver's side tire, the chocks need to block off the rear passenger side tire. This is a safety precaution because jacking up a vehicle will shift weight distribution and center of balance.

  • Place your jack underneath the correct jacking point. Your Trailblazer's owner manual will have the exact details about where and where not to place the jack. Typically, the jack should be placed beneath the front frame or the rear axle, near the wheel about to be raised. Do not stick the jack beneath the differential, as jacking at the wrong placing will damage your Trailblazer.

  • Turn the jack's crank and lift the wheel high enough that a vehicle stand or jack stand can be slid into place. Lower the the Trailblazer onto the stand. Repeat the process on the other wheels until the Trailblazer is completely off the ground.
