How to Change KLR Headlight Bulbs

Properly functioning headlights and tail lights are required on all vehicles and motorcycles on the road for the safety of motorists and pedestrians. There are times when the light bulbs in the assemblies need to be replaced due to damage or burning out. The headlight bulb replacement procedure for you KLR is a straightforward process that only requires a replacement bulb, an eight-millimeter socket wrench and an extension to complete the task.

Things You'll Need

  • Replacement bulb, 55/60 (type 9003 H4), 80/100 watt or 55/100 watt
  • 8 millimeter socket wrench
  • Socket wrench extension
  • Buy a replacement bulb for your KLR from an auto parts store. The stock bulb is 55/60, type 9003 H4. If you want a higher power bulb, you can get an 80/100 watt or 55/100 watt bulb.

  • Park your KLR on level ground and turn the ignition off.

  • Look between the front fender and the fairing. You will find a small black, plastic plate between the two.

  • Using a socket wrench and an extension, remove the two eight-millimeter bolts that hold the plastic plate in place. Put the bolts and plate to the side.

  • Reach your fingers into the area that was below the plate and pull the headlight socket out of the headlight assembly.

  • Grab the bulb and rotate it in a counterclockwise direction to remove it. Put it to the side. Attach a new bulb into the socket in a clockwise manner until snug.

  • Replace the socket into the headlight assembly, and replace the plate using the two bolts you removed.
