How to Repair a Stripped Window Crank on a Door on an Auto

If you try to roll down your window and the glass doesn't move, you likely have a stripped window crank. In most cases, it is the plastic crank handle itself that is stripped, not the metal bolt it is attached to. Repairing the manual crank itself is more of a replacement process. The crank is made out of molded plastic, so it would be better to just order a new one. This is much easier and effective than trying to repair the stripped elements within the crank. This part can be ordered from your dealership or an online vendor.

Things You'll Need

  • Hook tool
  • Lean on the door to create space between the base of the crank and the door panel. If you look into this space, you will see a metal clip in the shape of a "C."

  • Insert a hook tool between the base of the crank and the door panel. Slip the end of the hook over the bend in the "C" and pull it sharply.

  • Pick up the stripped window crank once it falls off. Discard it.

  • Place the C-clip over the bolt. You want the bolt snugly inside the inner part of the "C."

  • Place the replacement crank firmly onto the bolt and turn it. The turning direction depends on where the window is stuck. If the window is closed, you will have to turn as if you are rolling the window down. The inner part of the crank will catch onto the ends of the "C." The window will move once the crank is fully on the bolt.
