How to Mix Gelcoat for Spraying

Gelcoat is a special type of paint used on fiberglass, mainly on boat hulls due to its strength and versatility. Gelcoats use ISO/NPG (Isophthalic/Neopentyl Glychol) resins for boat hulls because of its protective qualities against water damage and high shine. Gelcoat can be used to 'buff' out small scratches on a boat hull and is great for small repairs. Mixing the gelcoat for spraying requires thinning the gelcoat enough so that it will spray evenly.

Things You'll Need

  • Gelcoat
  • Small dish
  • Coloring agent
  • Gelcoat hardener
  • Acetone
  • Place the gelcoat into a small mixing dish.

  • Add coloring agent to the gelcoat according to the color of your boat. Only add enough to match the desired color. Slowly mix in small amounts of coloring agent until it comes out properly.

  • Add 12 drops of hardener per ounce of gelcoat you have mixed to catalyze the material.

  • Add 10 to 15 percent acetone to the gelcoat mixture to thin it for spraying. Mix the paint with a paint stirrer.
