How to Reset After an Oil Change

You can reset the "Change Oil Soon" light on your instrument panel after you have had an oil change. Oftentimes it will reset automatically after you have changed the oil, but sometimes it doesn't and you have to reset it manually. It is an easy fix that will only take a few minutes of your time and requires no special tools. This procedure works for most but not all vehicles. Consult your owner's manual if it doesn't work to find out the exact procedure for your vehicle.

Things You'll Need

  • Ignition key
  • Put the key into the ignition and turn it to the "On" position, but don't start the engine.

  • Press the gas pedal all the way to the floor three times within five seconds.

  • Wait five to 10 seconds while the "Change Oil Soon" light blinks and then turns off. If this doesn't work the first time, repeat Steps 1 and 2. If it doesn't work the second time, consult your vehicle's owner's manual.
