How to Troubleshoot Problems With a Delco Car Radio E-13

The E-13 error code on a Delco radio signifies problems with tape communication. These problems typically arise from a stuck tape. Typically, removing the tape ends the error code, allowing you to use your radio normally again. Removing a stuck tape requires a gentle touch. Tugging on the tape can damage the sensors of the tape deck and might lead to further damage. If your tape player is installed in your car, turn off the car before attempting to remove the tape.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Compressed air
  • Push a screwdriver into the tape deck. Push the screwdriver under the tape and hold it there.

  • Grasp the end of the tape with needle-nose pliers.

  • Push the screwdriver up as you pull the pliers away from the tape deck to remove the tape.

  • Remove the Delco tape deck, if problems persist. Remove the screws that attach the Delco tape deck to the car using a screwdriver. Pull the tape deck out by several inches and disconnect the cable attached to the back of the tape deck. Remove the tape deck.

  • Clean out the tape deck. Spray the tape deck with compressed air to remove dust and damage. Reconnect the tape deck to the cables and place it back in the dash. Secure the screws that hold it in place.
